I eventually had to wing it out and away from the basket, then approach and putt again in order to hole out. This happened to me on two holes in a row recently and cost me about seven strokes in the game. (I imagine this problem is magnified on the smaller iPhone screen.)Īs with real disc golf, putting can be the hardest part. As a result, you can’t see your meters correctly, and can easily miss what would amount to a drop-in on a real course. Due to the way the game fits on the screen, putts of two feet or fewer seem to make the engine go a little wonky and get squished off the screen. When you do miss just short of the basket, though, is the game’s biggest shortcoming that I hope will be addressed. This ensures that you don’t low putt and clang off the basket, and more often than not will leave you smashing the chains.

Much like actual disc golf, the putting on this game is the trickiest part, but I do have a pro tip for new users - when trying to hit any putt, touch the power meter a little higher than the distance it says it is to the hole. (That’s not to say my wife hasn’t heard me cursing at the screen a few times when I have missed a gimme putt.) If I am going to bury myself in an iPad for 25 minutes or so (about the time it takes to play a round of 18 on the game), I want to have fun, not be exasperated. Here’s the thing, though - I don’t want it to be. So, unlike regular disc golf (for me), the game isn’t particularly challenging.

It’s one of the ways this game keeps you coming back.Īs of now, I have played through roughly 60% of the career mode, and I have been racking up victories left and right. After each tournament, you earn experience points that you can put toward different facets of your game, thus increasing your skills the more you play.

There’s a lot of options on the screen, which makes it easier on an iPad screen.Īfter a couple practice holes, I dove right in to the game’s career mode, where you can really test your virtual disc golfing skills and work up through the ranks from amateur to pro. Hit the sweet spots, and you’ve crushed it. Anyone familiar with video game engines that require both power and accuracy - such as those used in kicking a football or driving a golf ball - should be at home playing Disc Golf 3D, though, as it uses a pinging up-and-down meter for power and back-and-forth meter for location.

You’ll be playing for the fun factor.Ī brief on-screen tutorial then points out how to switch between discs and how to use the game’s drive engine. Honestly, though, you won’t be playing this game for how it looks. While the graphics aren’t flashy, they are serviceable, with trees that shake to emulate wind and varying levels of blue for water. Once on the course, players are treated to a flyover of each hole that serves to show the lay of the land and basket location.

Using familiar speed-glide-stability ratings, I was able to play with animal-named plastic like Antelope (driver), Manatee (mid-range) and the aptly-named Sloth (putter). I eased into the fray by testing out the game’s practice mode, where I was presented with a selection of discs from which to choose. I had the luxury of enjoying the game on an iPad 2.

Recently released by software company Nuclear Nova, Disc Golf 3D is available for download for Apple platforms and, for this disc golf junkie, was easy to get hooked on. I don't really think we want to see that happen because I think it will disrupt the disc market, but I think people just want to have fun making their own discs and playing with them.Nuclear Nova’s newest game - Disc Golf 3D. It would cost much less for new businesses to get in the game if this technology was advanced to a point that we could get the same quality as an injection molded golf disc. I think the interest in 3D printing (or similar) is focused on the fact that you don't have to spend so much money designing a mold and then having to make another mold if you want to tweak it. don't see a lot of home made bags, even though it would be cheaper and the technology exists you can take the time and materials and sew up a pretty sweet bag.

DX discs are about $4 each from Innova, and they are making a good profit margin selling them to the shops. you may be able to make them for your self cheaper, but trying to make and sell for a profit would be very difficult, as injection molding is soo cheap. It may be possible in the future, however the cost will be the question. Yeah you can do it at home, but the photo paper alone costs more. and then I'm gonna print nothing but Epics.Ĭost to get a commercial photo print - 9 cents. I don't think we'll be waiting forever for 3D printer tech to advance in resolution and materials. we used to have dot matrix printers and now we can print photographs. I was likening it to our current printers.
